Ko Makabe AIA

Since joining KPF in 1997, Ko Makabe has worked as an architectural designer on a number of the firm’s most high-profile commercial, mixed-use, and hospitality projects throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Of note, Ko was the Senior Designer for the Nihonbashi 1-Chome Building, an office and retail mixed-used building in Tokyo. Also in Tokyo, Ko was part of the KPF design team for the Mori Tower at Roppongi Hills, a mixed-use complex containing office, residential, hotel, theater, broadcast and retail functions. In Nagano, Ko served as the Senior Designer for the INCS “Zero” Factory, a demonstration facility showcasing rapid prototyping technologies, and, in Nagoya, for the JR Central Towers and Station, a mixed-use project comprising office, hotel and retail in two towers built above active rail lines.

His hospitality work in the United States includes the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences at MGM City Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. In China, he has worked on a variety of mixed-use projects, including the 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center, presently the world’s third tallest building, whose dynamic program includes office, a Park Hyatt hotel and retail. Ko also worked on the design for Chongqing City Investment Company in the Jiangbeizui Central Business District.

Most recently Ko has been leading the design of a European bank headquarters in London and the Tokyo Garden Terrace in Tokyo, a development is a 2.2 million square foot mixed-use development that will feature office, hotel, residential, and retail in the heart of the Central district.

He is also designing TGMM Shibaura project in Tokyo, a 3 million square foot mixed-use project, and Three Sixty West, a mixed-use complex in South Mumbai. Comprised of two towers, the tower at the north end of the site will offer a Ritz-Carlton hotel with 200 guestrooms, sky lobby, and outstanding sea views.

Ko was a recipient of the 2014 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award.
