The KPF Principal presented “Designing for Context Across Multiple Scales.”
Mustafa has led the design of internationally significant projects including supertall towers, airport terminals, and urban districts. His presentation explored how architects can design for integration with the urban context, across multiple scales and locations. From the approach of ‘urban acupuncture’ that has guided the development of London’s Covent Garden, to the creation of important new urban centres, such as Gemdale Center in Shenzhen. It will also consider the urban condition of the periphery, as seen at Atlantis The Royal, Dubai, and the design process for Zayed International Airport. A building on a truly urban scale, the airport was created to be a symbol for Abu Dhabi and was recently described as “A perfect architectural ambassador for the modern-day city” by Monocle.
Atlantis The Royal is a landmark resort on Dubai’s Palm Jumeriah Island designed by KPF. One of the city’s most iconic buildings, it features a series of sky courts and terraces and provides world-class hotel and residential accommodation. In 2023 it won a CTBUH Award of Excellence and was named the Best Tall Building in the Middle East & Africa.
2025 CTBUH Dubai Conference, “From Souk to Skyline: Stitching Streets into the Fabric of a Connected City.”
