Connections, an online publication from Hang Lung Properties—the developer of Westlake 66 and a longstanding KPF client—recently interviewed the KPF Principal about the inspiration behind the contextual mixed-use development currently under construction in Hangzhou, China.
Westlake 66 rises in the heart of Hangzhou’s historic Wulin commercial district, setting a new benchmark for lifestyle destinations and cultural landmarks in the city. Developed by Hang Lung Properties, with whom KPF has partnered on landmark projects including Plaza 66 and Forum 66, the new development draws inspiration from Huang Gongwang’s renowned shanshui painting “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” and translates Hangzhou’s poetic landscapes into built form. The façade references the ancient masonry patterns of Lingyin Temple and the storied Broken Bridge of West Lake, accented with glazed terra cotta in red, orange, and yellow tones drawn from local heritage.
“Westlake 66 is more than an urban building, it connects the city’s major landmarks—the West Lake and the Grand Canal,” says Jeff in the article. “Its elevated sky park offers great views of the Lake in the mountains, while the pedestrian boulevard brings energy to the street and gives back to the city’s fluidity.”
The development also includes the preservation and exhibition of two heritage sites from the Yuan and Song dynasties, which will be relocated, restored, and displayed in a dedicated underground gallery spanning over 1,000 square meters. With nearly 83% of retail space already committed, a curated mix of flagship stores, new-to-market concepts, and diverse dining options, Westlake 66 is poised to reshape how people interact with Hangzhou, fostering a dynamic blend of lifestyle, cultural engagement, and community.
