The firm has joined peers in signing the AIA Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Resilience Pledge, affirming resilience as an urgent and core part of its mission.
Extreme weather events are increasingly disrupting the places and systems our clients and communities depend on. As a global practice, we recognize that we have a responsibility—and an opportunity—to reduce these impacts by anticipating risk, preparing for changing conditions, and helping our clients and communities become more resilient.
Because KPF is a global firm with projects in cities around the world, our work is exposed to a wide variety of climate and extreme weather risks, and our firm has taken a leading role in designing to meet them. Projects such as the NYCHA Red Hook Houses in New York, Channelside in Boston, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Campus in Guangzhou are designed for resilience in the face of increasing flood risks. Projects such as Tower Urban Oasis in Taipei, the Comcentre Redevelopment in Singapore, and the KAFD Central Hub in Saudi Arabia aim to mitigate the harms of extreme heat through engineered microclimates.
In signing the AIA DRR and Resilience Pledge, KPF has committed to establishing disaster risk reduction and resilience as a core value throughout the firm’s practice—integrating resilience into the design process; building resilient design expertise across the firm; advocating for resilience with clients, consultants, stakeholders, and communities; and exploring opportunities to advance risk reduction beyond individual projects.
