On October 28, the KPF President and Design Principal will deliver a lecture on layering as a tool to create vibrant urban centers followed by an interactive Q&A.
With 40 years of professional architectural experience, Jamie has developed highly effective techniques for shaping cities to increase resilience, equality, growth. His lecture “Layering the City” explores how, by superimposing layers of space and mass, architects can multiply opportunities for circulation connections in dense urban conditions. By carefully coordinating new and existing parts of the city fabric, Jamie believes that designers can relate old and new in a coherent and harmonious way, while splicing multiple uses together within a single building creates a vibrant diversity of activity within what otherwise might be a single-purpose structure.
The lecture expands on ideas Jamie touched on in his recent speech at the COIMA anniversary event in Milan, tracing the theme of urban layering through a range of KPF-designed projects including One Vanderbilt, 8 Canada Square, and 64 University Place, exploring how each contributes a desirable quality to its urban context. The event will be held in Sowoojae Hall, on the 4th floor of Building 39 at the Seoul National University on October 28, with Jamie’s lecture beginning at 5pm local time.
