The Tisch Cancer Hospital transforms and elevates the presence of Mount Sinai’s main campus on Madison Avenue and creates a state-of-the-art facility for cancer care.
The adaptive reuse project renovates the existing 1962 Klingenstein Clinical Center and features 72 fully-ADA-compliant acuity-adaptable patient rooms, a dedicated Oncology Care Unit, a new Apherises treatment wing, and new wellness amenities such as a medi-spa and a family welcome center for inpatients and outpatients. Through this site-specific design approach, the full interior renovation, complete facade and mechanical systems replacement the project will position itself as a model in patient care, energy conservation and community integration in New York City.
The design of the façade takes cues from the rich history of the campus’ existing architectural fabric, re-imagining its material palette and formal gestures in warm-toned terra cotta. The new soaring entry portal invites visitors in from bustling Madison Avenue and through a serene lobby as they proceed to their destinations. Once on a clinical floor, patients are met by an amenity sky garden and wellness lounge nestled into the southeast corner of the building, where peace and respite can be found within the tall space’s ample natural light and elevated city views. Framed vertical windows further articulate the building’s form, extending down to the street level and joining the sidewalk alongside planting and benches.
Slated for completion in 2029, the building will be key to a larger vision to transform Mount Sinai’s primary campus along Madison Avenue into a more unified experience and identity.
