Expanding upon KPF’s first mixed-use development in Asia, the new Retail Pavilion at Plaza 66 enriches Shanghai’s urban fabric with a pedestrian-oriented, garden-centric design that elegantly bridges bustling commercial activity and the tranquility of a residential neighborhood.

The Plaza 66 Retail Pavilion anchors one of Shanghai’s most iconic and commercially successful retail centers with a porous, human-scaled form. Strategically positioned between the busy West Nanjing Road and a verdant residential enclave, its three terraced levels cascade upward, stepping back gracefully from the street to create green, accessible terraces for retail and dining.

The pavilion’s elegant form juxtaposes rounded, ground-level masses with a cantilevered, curved volume that frames a dramatic gateway to a central garden. This courtyard, bound by the existing towers of Plaza 66, serves as a dynamic civic space, featuring a serpentine staircase for upper-level access and a glazed escalator that connects to the larger retail complex. Architectural detailing celebrates the pavilion’s lush setting; intricate, multi-layered bronze screens inspired by traditional Chinese garden imagery adorn the exterior, with perforated patterns evoking foliage and tree trunks. Interiors emphasize natural tones and vertical lines, aligning with the aesthetic language of the broader Plaza 66 development.

Targeting LEED Gold and China Green Building 2-star certifications, the pavilion incorporates advanced strategies to minimize embodied and operational carbon, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2060. The building uses nearly 100% low carbon emissions steel in its above ground structure, the first project in mainland China to do so. Lush plantings on terraces and roofs align with Shanghai’s sponge city initiative, while the massing promotes natural ventilation through public corridors. Additional green features include greywater reuse systems and high-performance, low-e, double-glazed glass.
