Long considered one of the city’s preeminent private healthcare facilities, the HKSH Hospital phased development expands the institution’s reach and celebrates the hospital’s commitment to excellence.

Established in 1922, the hospital was organized by a leading group of Chinese medical practitioners and prominent residents to provide inpatient services comparable in standard to luxury hotels with accessible patient accommodations. KPF led the design to expand the capacity of the original facilities, including additional inpatient/outpatient beds, additional space for radiotherapy, clinical diagnostic services for radiology and nuclear medicine (or cyclotrons), allied services for pharmacy and physiotherapy, as well as other support services.

Located adjacent to the Happy Valley Racecourse at the base of Mount Nicholson, the project site posed several challenges. With constrained site dimensions, inpatient and outpatient program components are stacked vertically, maximizing floorplate efficiency and minimizing the number of elevators required for each user group. With all major cores on the south-facing mountain side, exceptional panoramic views out towards the racing track and the city beyond enhance public spaces and internal circulation. The 16th-floor sky lobby is a wide-open, double-height space that connects to other public spaces one floor below. This welcoming open plan configuration is employed on each level, strategically placing public lounges where the existing and new building connect.
