The evolution of Shanghai’s Plaza 66—KPF’s first project in Asia back in 1994—reached a new milestone as the KPF-designed Retail Pavilion celebrated its topping out, with completion slated for the second half of 2026.
Hang Lung Properties has announced the structural completion of the low-rise Retail Pavilion at Plaza 66, expanding the complex with a pedestrian-oriented, garden-centric design that elegantly connects West Nanjing Road’s commercial energy to the calm of a neighboring residential enclave. The pavilion’s three terraced levels step back from the street, creating green, accessible terraces for retail and dining, while its human-scaled form anchors the development as a gateway to a lush central garden and dynamic public space.
This latest phase adds 3,080 square meters of ground floor area, increasing Plaza 66’s leasable space by 13% and introducing new retail, dining, and event concepts to Shanghai’s Jing’an District. Architectural details such as intricate bronze screens, inspired by traditional Chinese gardens, and interiors that echo the natural landscape, reinforce the pavilion’s connection to its setting. Targeting LEED Gold and China Green Building 2-star certifications, the project represents sustainability leadership in Shanghai, featuring nearly 100% low-carbon steel in its above-ground structure, lush rooftop plantings, natural ventilation, and advanced water reuse systems.
