James von Klemperer, Hana Kassem, and Carlos Cerezo Davila Present at AIA25

Jamie joined a conference workshop on global architecture while Hana and Carlos led a discussion about the KPF-designed Vagelos Innovation Laboratories at the national AIA conference.

Beginning at 9am local time on June 4, the KPF President and Design Principal participated in “Shaping the Future of Design Across Borders: A Global Architecture Workshop presented by AIA International,” sharing his extensive experience designing for diverse geographies, cultures, and systems with interested attendees. This comprehensive workshop focused on the creation of a “Global Architecture White Paper,” or a framework that addresses the key challenges, opportunities, and strategies for architects working across borders.

At 11am the same day, KPF Design Principal Hana Kassem and KPF Global Director of Sustainability Carlos Cerezo Davila discussed their work on the new Columbia University lab building with Patrick Burke FAIA, Vice President of Facilities Management, Operations & Planning at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, during a seminar titled “Going All Electric: Creating a Catalyst for Campus Decarbonization.” Balancing the need to expand research facilities with rigorous sustainability standards, the University’s 2030 Sustainability Plan initiative led to New York City’s first all-electric lab and paves the way for campus-wide decarbonization. Hana, Carlos and Patrick explained why—and how—this facility represents a breakthrough in eliminating on-site fossil fuels.

Taking place in Boston June 4 – 7, the annual conference of the American Institute of Architects convened AEC professionals, students, and leaders from across the country for an unparalleled multi-day program of seminars, workshops, tours, presentations, and networking opportunities.
