Carlos Cerezo Davila Discusses Decarbonization for Life Sciences Labs at NYBC Healthcare & Life Sciences Committee Panel

KPF’s Global Director of Sustainability joined a New York Building Congress panel, organized by KPF Senior Associate Principal Georgina Lalli, to share insights from the all-electric lab building currently under construction on the Columbia University campus.

Decarbonizing life sciences and healthcare facilities is both vital to meet institutions’ sustainability goals and technically challenging because of these buildings’ particular requirements. With its state-of-the-art, all-electric design, the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories demonstrate KPF’s evidence-based approach to integrating architectural and mechanical solutions for improved environmental performance.

An active member of the New York Building Congress Healthcare & Life Sciences committee, Georgina assembled this panel to focus on the design and construction challenges of an all-electric lab versus a conventional lab and explore lessons the design team learned during the process. She has contributed to several panel discussions on the topic, including “Science and the City,” a KPF-hosted discussion on the roles of the research and healthcare industries in designing a more sustainable city, and “Piloting Healthcare’s Road to Recovery,” an Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP) event panel that included a conversation on the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories and its compliance with Local Law 97.

Carlos is a frequent panelist at sustainability-focused events around the country, including a panel discussion at Greenbuild 2024, a seat on the Closer LOOK panel organized by the Municipal Art Society of New York, and recent participation in a conversation on Data-Driven Sustainability at TECH+. He joined the NYBC panel with Patrick Burke, Vice President, Facilities Management, Operations & Planning at Columbia University, Jeffrey Rios PE, LEED AP, Senior Vice President, Built Ecology, WSP, and James Bickerstaff, Jr., Project Manager, LF Driscoll Healthcare.

The event took place at the New York Building Congress on February 6 at 8:30am local time.
