KPF’s Global Director of Sustainability will join industry experts on a Closer LOOK panel to discuss Local Law 97, the landmark climate law, and what it means for the city’s built environment.
New York City’s Local Law 97, which was passed by the city council in 2019, is among the most ambitious climate laws in the country and sets rigorous carbon emissions reduction mandates for buildings. Beginning this year, most buildings larger than 25,000 square feet must comply with energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions limits or face serious fines, with stricter limits coming in 2030. For New York City to meet its goal of zero emissions from buildings by 2050, the law must be implemented successfully, but the extent of compliance is uncertain and the law has faced legal challenges and pushback from property owners.
On Wednesday, December 11, Carlos will join Jonathan Flaherty, Managing Director, Global Head of Sustainability and Building Technologies at Tishman Speyer; Amy Turner, Director of the Cities Climate Law Initiative at Columbia Law School’s Sabin Center; and Tom Devaney, Senior Director of Land Use and Planning at MAS for an engaging discussion of Local Law 97’s challenges, implementation, and the path forward to decarbonize New York City’s built environment.
