Bard College Residence Halls Celebrate Grand Opening with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The latest addition to Bard College’s campus, the KPF-designed, Passive House-certified residence halls marked their completion with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by college leadership, KPF representatives, and members of the student community.

Comprising four suite-style dormitory buildings and a communal Head House, the Bard College Residence Halls are poised to become a new benchmark for sustainable student living. Housing more than 400 students, the project exemplifies KPF’s commitment to climate-responsive design, achieving one of the world’s most rigorous energy efficiency standards. The buildings’ super-insulated envelopes and triple-glazed windows maintain year-round comfort, while a geothermal field provides heating and cooling, supporting Bard’s broader decarbonization goals.

The ceremony featured remarks from KPF President and Principal James von Klemperer, with Director Greg Mell, Director Ana Leshinsky, Senior Associate Principal Devon Loweth-Babel, and Associate Principal Leif Lee in attendance to celebrate the milestone. The event highlighted the expressive character of the residence halls, which challenge the conventions of Passive House architecture. The brick façades are animated by alternating recessed and protruding bricks, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow around windows and entrances. Set at the north end of campus near the Frank Gerhy–designed performing arts center, the buildings are surrounded by meadows and orchard trees, offering views of the Catskill Mountains and fostering a vibrant student community. The grand opening underscored the project’s role in shaping Bard’s future, providing resilient, beautiful, and sustainable spaces for generations of students.
