Archtober Building of the Day: NYCHA Red Hook Houses

KPF’s NYCHA Red Hook Houses Resiliency & Recovery project has been selected as Archtober’s Building of the Day on October 9.

Celebrating Archtober’s 15th anniversary and this year’s “Shared Spaces” theme, the Center for Architecture offered a guided tour of KPF’s resiliency intervention at the Red Hook Houses in Brooklyn. Led by KPF Associate Principal Mustafa Khan, this event highlighted how architecture and design can foster community resilience through shared resources across New York City. Developed in partnership with NYCHA and informed by residents’ input, KPF’s resiliency and renewal program strengthens the development’s infrastructure in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, enhancing livability for more than 6,000 people in 28 buildings.

The project’s innovative “lily pad” landscape solution offers subtle, permanent flood protection while transforming courtyards into vibrant social spaces. Above-ground utility buildings and decentralized infrastructure further support the development’s resilience, raising essential systems above flood level. Community input was integral throughout the design process, with focus groups, workshops, and surveys shaping a vision that prioritizes both safety and quality of life. The October 9 tour provided insight into these strategies and the collaborative approach behind the project.
