On August 8, the Red Hook East community gathered to celebrate the unveiling of “Red Hook Dreams,” a vibrant new mural decorating the KPF-designed utility plant that serves the Brooklyn development.
Created through a dynamic partnership between the Public Housing Community Fund, Artolution, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and the residents of Red Hook East, “Red Hook Dreams” is a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity. Led by artist Max Frieder, alongside local artists and dedicated volunteers, the mural reflects the resilience, imagination, and pride of the Red Hook community. The colorful artwork transforms the streetscape and joins public art pieces from previous years, offering a visual narrative that honors the neighborhood’s unique spirit and collective .
“We are thrilled to celebrate the unveiling of the remarkable mural Red Hook Dreams. Community-led public art creates a powerful sense of belonging and connection to place. It has the power to enliven neighborhoods, reflect collective stories, and inspire pride among residents,” says KPF Principal Hana Kassem. “A key part of the post-Sandy resiliency and recovery work at the NYCHA Red Hook Houses, Red Hook Dreams is more than a vibrant addition to the built environment—it embodies the collaboration, resilience, and enduring spirit of this community.”
KPF’s sponsorship of this project, alongside Arup and Snap Inc., reflects the firm’s belief in the power of public art to uplift and empower urban communities. The mural marks the first phase of an ongoing initiative: In early August, youth from Red Hook East will use Snap’s Lens Studio to create an immersive augmented reality experience, blending technology, storytelling, and local creativity. “Red Hook Dreams” now stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, inviting all to celebrate the enduring strength and unity of the Red Hook community.
