A contemporary take on the American vernacular, 64 University Place is recognized in the Architecture +Brick category.
The 11-story residential building plays homage to the historic revival-style of Greenwich Village, New York, and responds to its context in scale, materiality, and texture. An expression of KPF’s dedication to craft, the façade of 64 University Place is composed of a grid of deeply recessed shallow arches constructed of hand-laid brick to provide depth and texture along the street wall. Its impeccable finish was reliant on the expertise and precision of the bricklayers as well as the thoughtful detailing and careful selection of materials. Flashed bricks were specified for their subtle color variation, then laid with an a-typical 3/8” raked mortar joint, with grout selected in a similar colour allowing the façade to read as sculpturally continuous form.
