Inspired both by Macau’s natural setting and its vibrant district of gaming and nightlife, One Central is a versatile development that can be serene by day and dynamic by night.
With Nam Van Lake to the west and the China Sea to the south, the site is dominated by the presence of water, which influences all aspects of the design; from the fluid formal gestures to the faceted façades that interact with reflected light from the surrounding waters. The centerpiece of the mixed-use development is the 42-story Signature Tower, featuring the urban-resort concept, Mandarin Oriental, Macau. As one of the tallest buildings on the city skyline, the tower leans toward the water, making it visible from the high-speed hydrofoil link to Hong Kong. The tower’s tapering form is a distinguished addition to Macau’s rich urban character.
The hotel tower is clad in rippled reflective glass, which is designed to scatter and reflect light in a kaleidoscopic fashion. In the guest rooms, the ripples create bay-window conditions that produce subtle variations in plan and emphasize views and light. At night, the ripples are accentuated by dynamic lighting activated by the frequency and intensity of the China Sea tide. The hotel’s podium houses retail shops and restaurants. Its illuminated, double-wall façade forms a backdrop for luxury flagship stores, each with a jewel-like presence on the promenade. Above the podium, the towers of the One Central Residences complete this vibrant new community in which each brand and activity reinforces the overall image of the development.
