The CUSP Building provides a vibrant new center for urban engineering, a place where young entrepreneurs and cutting-edge business leaders connect with brilliant researchers and energetic students.
Located in Downtown Brooklyn’s Technology Triangle, the center is a striking new emblem for the neighborhood’s emergence as a center for innovation. Previously home to the MTA’s administrative offices, the building is transformed into a hub for urban engineering ventures, including NYU’s new CUSP program, incubator spaces for spin-off companies, and offices for industry-leading companies. This dynamic mix of tenants will be connected by a highly visible “network”: a line of shared spaces including a conference center, common labs, new media spaces, a café, a fitness center and public gathering spaces, where the academic and business communities, as well as the people of Brooklyn, will coalesce.
The energy within the building will be directly expressed on the new façade, which will display the bustling, 24-hour, linear network behind a section of transparent glass. The rest of 370 Jay Street will be wrapped by a shimmering façade of faceted metal panels that weave across the building, reflecting both the light from the sky and the hum of activity on the Downtown Brooklyn streets.
The CUSP program is a joint venture between leaders in higher education, the tech industry, and public service that fosters collaboration between the academic and the private sectors to the city’s tech sector and economy. With light-filled, active, and accessible common spaces, the design creates a place where this kind of collaboration can flourish.
