Carriage Hall

Carriage Hall is one of a trio of developments that have transformed cobbled Floral Street into a premium retail and residential address.

The renovation of Carriage Hall has rejuvenated the under used western end of Floral Street by converting a historic building to create a unique retail unit suitable for a high-end multi-brand tenant and enhancing the block through a series of sensitive refurbishments and dramatic interventions.

The site comprises three adjacent interconnected buildings of different eras, all set around the Grade II-listed building known as ‘The Carriage Hall’.

KPF’s work included enriching the historic fabric with the insertion of bold new materials – such as the dramatic new roof light with glazing panels that span 8 metres. Additionally, the floorplate was altered and extended to allow a full perambulation of the central space – restoring the original form of the building.

A beautifully minimal skylight above the formerly open courtyard creates a new central atrium space at the heart of the new retail store, while a bespoke bench outside the hall references the original purpose of the building as a carriage works, demonstrating a marriage of careful conservation and playful detailing.
