KPF celebrated the opening of the mixed-use development at a ribbon cutting ceremony with developer Hang Lung Properties.
Westlake 66 is a mixed-use destination situated between Hangzhou’s West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the historic Grand Canal. The project brings together retail, office, hospitality, and public space — establishing a new benchmark for lifestyle-driven urban design in the region.
“The ambition for Westlake 66 was to create a connective architecture as landscape—one that brings together city, nature, and community into a continuous and immersive experience,” says Jeff Kenoff FAIA, KPF Design Principal.
Drawing inspiration from the layered topography and stone walls of West Lake, Westlake 66 is conceived as a pedestrian greenway—carving a landscape through the site and re-linking two of Hangzhou’s most important cultural anchors. At the heart of the project, a sky park atop the podium provides over 10,000 square meters of public green space, seamlessly linking the office towers, retail, and hotel through a panoramic corridor.
The architecture is anchored by a cell-wall-inspired façade that creates continuity across its varied programs and is designed to evolve over time. Rendered in stepped terra cotta modules, the “façade echoes the organic textures and colors of the surroundings, weaving nature into the city,” explains Minho Jeon AIA, KPF Senior Associate Principal and Senior Designer for Westlake 66.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the project. KPFui employed proprietary parametric algorithms to optimize building massing and minimize shadow impact on neighboring structures, while the project pioneered the use of low-carbon concrete blocks in commercial development across the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong. Westlake 66 has earned certifications including LEED, WELL, BREEAM, and the China Green Building Design Label.
