On October 16, the KPF Director will moderate a panel at the globally recognized conference about materiality in architecture, highlighting the design process behind the residential building’s hand-laid brick façade.
As Senior Designer on the Greenwich Village project, Rutger will describe the architectural methodology behind one of the area’s most striking new façades. Home to 28 boutique residences, 64 University Place responds to its local context in scale, materiality, and texture. Following the character of neighboring buildings, it gracefully continues the street wall, gently stepping back at the upper floors as it reaches its full height, providing terraces for residents. The building’s street face features a grid of five bays defined by pilasters and arched windows, articulated in artisanal brick masonry to create fluency with the adjacent building façades.
The Zak World of Facades conference series focuses on façade design and engineering, welcoming global design professionals to explicate their work on the world’s premiere building façades. Rutger will moderate a conversation with Ameesh Agarwal, President of B|Safal Incorporated, Matthias Hollwich, Founding Principal of HWKN Architecture; Andrea Hatzinikolas, Principal at FERO; and John Matzelle, Executive Vice President of Sales at Consolidated Brick on a panel entitled “Hand-Crafting a Modern Aesthetic with Old-World Brick.” The one-day event will focus on sustainable innovations and tackle construction industry challenges related to the building envelope.
