The KPF Principal spoke to The Edge Malaysia for a feature in City & Country, the newspaper’s weekly property publication, about the design ambition behind the new retail destination in the heart of the city.
Located within the Kuala Lumpur City Centre precinct and adjacent to the PETRONAS Twin Towers, the six-story pavilion is defined by a dramatic cantilevered structure and flowing, ribbon-like façade. The design creates a new rooftop public terrace overlooking the city while establishing a series of interconnected spaces organized around a central oculus.
In the feature, Mustafa discusses how KPF approached the complex geometry and construction of the building alongside future proofing for additional growth. The foundations for a supertall tower have been constructed to allow for future development while keeping the podium and MRT station operational.
The exclusive feature also explores KPF’s ambition to create an engaging public experience throughout the building, with Mustafa describing the Ombak KLCC as dynamic space, where visitors will enjoy a journey of discovery from the MTR station, through the atrium to public terrace on the rooftop.
“How do we write today’s architectural history?” asked Mustafa, discussing his design philosophy, “In our view, buildings should reflect the technology of the time. We want to create a building that’s possible today using the latest technology and the latest inspiration, a building that is specific to the challenges of the site. When you put all this together, you can write your own historical chapter”.
