The KPF Principal explored the design of Lisbon’s first LEED and WELL Platinum development, an adaptive reuse project which retained 91% of its original structure.
John was joined by Miguel Barbas of Norfin and Tiago Sallas of Saraiva+Associados. They discussed how the unfinished, city-block-sized shopping mall in the Parque das Nações district was transformed into a world-class innovation hub of flexible technology and laboratory-enabled workspaces and learning environments.
Recognizing Lisbon’s rapid growth in the technology sector, the team saw the building’s open floor plates as an opportunity to deliver A-grade office space desired by international technology and research firms. The deep floorplates were reconfigured and opened to create light-filled interiors that are naturally ventilated for about a third of the year. Stepped terraces, planted courtyards, and a landscaped rooftop—together forming a “fifth façade” of 19,000m²—embed the building within a culture of wellness and community.
