The KPF Senior Associate Principal presented about storytelling through architecture, emphasizing how design that aligns with local culture, identity, and atmosphere can strengthen the urban realm.
Focusing on China’s recent period of rapid urban development, the “Ten Years, One Moment” conference invited leaders to share their “Design Recommendation” for the future of the country. Organized by DJSER and held at the Shenzhen International Hotel and Commercial Space Expo, the event welcomed speakers from all sectors of the industry, hosted vendors, and announced the winners of the CRED Design Award.
Dora’s presentation covered the importance of location, humanity, scale, and technology for effective architecture and was structured around the example of KPF’s renewal of Covent Garden. “With extensive experience in urban renewal projects in China, I find it fascinating to compare these experiences with Covent Garden’s revitalization in London,” says Dora. “The area’s transformation and positive public response underscore the success of thoughtful urban design.”
London’s Covent Garden district is an assemblage of smaller spaces including Floral Court, a historic community arranged around a newly created courtyard that interfaces with the surrounding urban fabric and becomes a quiet haven in the hustle and bustle of central London. Contemporary architecture is intertwined with the existing buildings at a human-scale, telling the story of the city for today’s occupants and visitors.
Reflecting on her experience at the conference, Dora identifies the interactions between design professionals as an asset to her own work. “Engaging with fellow architects has further enriched my understanding, offering fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to sustainable urban development,” she says.
Dora’s presentation took place on December 13. Find out more about the event here.
