Lined with highly transparent cafes, shops, and public amenities, High Street creates a vibrant campus edge and provides a gathering area for faculty and post-graduate and Ph.D. students that live in the residential neighborhood.
The inclusion of the High Street neighborhood within the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)’s master plan blurs the threshold between campus and city. Accommodating HKUST(GZ)’s expansive design, High Street offers a central, social hub for the student body, faculty, and greater public, connecting the campus to the greater community of Guangzhou.
Housing options range from five-story up to 17-story buildings, with various configurations for the units to best fit student needs, with laundry, social spaces, and storage located along the promenade of High Street. The buildings are varied in height to maximize views from the interiors, and each has its own courtyard with lush landscaping and amenity pavilions. A variety of food and beverage options are available along High Street, in addition to a supermarket, medical clinic, and a college bookstore.
The base of each building is open and covered, offering shaded outdoors for residents as they enjoy multi-function spaces. The porosity between courtyards also promotes air movement within the neighborhood. PV panels and roof gardens are incorporated on top of the buildings to enhance the campus sustainability measures. All rooms have operable windows and employ a variety of sun shading techniques suited to their orientation.
