Shoreditch Works Praised as “Exemplar” in City AM

Shoreditch Works is a development the whole of London should seek to replicate,” says Nicolas Boys Smith in the London title.

The article shares the results of Create Streets’ “critical friend review,” which considers KPF-designed Shoreditch Works from the three scales of Bird’s Eye (beyond the red line), Adult’s Eye (streets and geometry) and Child’s Eye (materials and design). As part of the review, a representative sample of the British population was shown carefully controlled image comparisons, illustrating the condition of the existing site alongside the proposed development. The proposed, taller designs won 76-78% support, compared to just 22-24% for the status quo.

Boys  Smith writes: “…The Shoreditch Works proposal is exemplar. This is the way. This is the right approach to the growth and beautification of our capital city. The bricks and arches echo the past and speak to the future. Here is a place where we can mingle traditional wisdom with modern rebirth. Here is a place that ‘fits in’ and feels right.”

Boys Smith is the founder and chairman of Create Streets, a design practice, town-builder and think tank.
