Bernard Chang, Florence Chan, Martin Tang, and Yunxiang Peng present their speculative project titled “Porosity 4 Prosperity” at the exhibition’s Hong Kong Collateral Event, held virtually for the first time in its 17 year history.
The virtual exhibition allows visitors to explore the various exhibits via mobile phone, tablet, or computer, through a 360-degree immersive experience. The contributors from KPF showcase their work alongside 53 other companies and organizations including other local and international architecture firms, businesses, and higher education institutions.
“Porosity 4 Prosperity” offers a solution to Hong Kong’s land shortage issue by building into the island’s mountainous topography to create new space while avoiding obstruction of the iconic skyline and landscape. The solution goes one step further by providing a use for the excavated soil: to support the Lantau Tomorrow Vision, a 1700-hectare plan created by the Hong Kong Government in 2019. The model brings the idea to life as it invites viewers to imagine the beauty of the subterranean spaces.
The Hong Kong Collateral Event is co-organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in partnership with The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), together with Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the lead sponsor. The curatorial team selected “Redistribution: Land, People, and Environment” as the theme of this year’s event. The Hong Kong Collateral Event is part of the 17th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition.
