KPF’s London office welcomed students from Southwark College for a week-long introduction to architecture.
The program was led by Director Sam Cooke, who explained, “Those practicing architecture in the UK have traditionally come from a rather narrow swathe of society, but we believe that having a more representative industry will lead to improvements in the way we design and practice. We often find that people entering the profession already know someone in the industry, which helps them to understand the opportunities and secure work experience, but this culture can also act as a barrier to people without existing connections. We started by presenting at the College, to include students who may never have considered a career in architecture. The work experience comes at an important point in their education when they are considering university choices and was designed to give them an understanding of the variety of roles available within an architecture practice.”
Events were designed to provide students with a broad experience of the office ecosystem, including drawing and 3D modelling workshops with the architects, virtual reality demos and sustainability sessions with members of the Environmental Performance team, and personal branding workshops with the marketing team. Participating students were assigned a buddy for the week and had the opportunity to work with various members of the London office.
