Hosted by the CUNY Graduate Center on October 16, the KPF Principal discussed academic campus design with leaders in management, development, and planning in the world of higher education.
With a portfolio spanning four continents, Jorge has worked on planning, adaptive reuse, supertall, and mixed-use projects aimed at enhancing the global urban fabric. Currently the Project Manager for the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories at Columbia University, Jorge joined a panel to discuss KPF’s strategy for designing sustainably oriented, student-centered academic spaces. His professional experience with architecture and urban design in and around places of higher education informed the forum’s conversation on the improvement of educational design to be more environmentally, socially, and economically friendly. Jorge’s panel included Patrick Burke, Columbia Medical Center’s Vice President of Facilities Management, Operations, and Planning; Edward McArthur, Columbia’s Vice President of Capital Project Management; and Jason Sylvain, Owner and Partner of AKF Group.
The Higher Education Forum, organized by Commercial Observer and held at the CUNY Graduate Center, is a part of the publication’s Design and Construction series and covered topics such as “harmonizing vision and reality in campus planning, rethinking traditional approaches to academic workplace design, and building spaces to foster academic and personal growth.” The event brought together experts and stakeholders in the industry to theorize and plan for more “adaptable and forward-thinking educational environments.”
