Hana Kassem Presents Vagelos Innovation Laboratories at AIA New York’s Center for Architecture

The KPF Principal will discuss her work on the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories at Columbia University in a symposium focused on the design of all-electric, net zero–ready research buildings in New York City.

“Electric Avenues: New York City’s First Net-Zero Research Buildings” will feature discussion of two all-electric research buildings in New York City. KPF Principal Hana Kassem will present the design for the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories at Columbia University alongside Jeffrey Rios, Senior Vice President of WSP Engineers. Perkins&Will and JB&B Engineers will also present their work on the Roy & Diana Vagelos Science Center at Barnard College. Both projects pursue all-electric, fossil-fuel-free operations in compliance with New York City’s Local Law 97. Presentations by the architects and engineers of each project will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Gina Bocra, Vice President of WSP, focused on the challenges and opportunities of designing all-electric research buildings in New York City.

Set to open in the fall, the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories will be the first purpose-built, all-electric academic research lab in New York City. The 75,000-square-foot biomedical research and education space was designed to align with the University’s decarbonization goals while supporting a robust program of scientific research.

“Electric Avenues: New York City’s First Net-Zero Research Buildings” will take place on July 8, from 6–8 PM at the Center for Architecture in New York City.
