Following the announcement by the Singapore Prime Minister, the publication details the project’s scope, impact, and qualifications supplemented by a construction update in its annual global roundup.
A significant addition to the beloved global airport, Changi Terminal 5 (T5) is designed to handle approximately 50 million passengers per year and will be built flexibly in line with traffic growth. “The International Air Transport Association projects that post-Covid air passenger volume will double by 2040,” says Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, “So we must continue to sharpen our competitive edge and develop new advantages to set us apart. The most important thing we are doing for the next leg of our aviation journey is our investment in T5.”
Changi T5 is aiming to be a Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy Building and reduce its carbon footprint with solar panels, thermal energy storage, district cooling, and smart building management systems. The new terminal will connect to the existing airport infrastructure as well as the city of Singapore via a dedicated ground transportation center with rail and bus service. Set to break ground in the first half of 2025, T5 will occupy the 1,080-hectare Changi East industrial area, which has a similar land area to the current Changi airport. The new terminal is designed by KPF and Heatherwick Studio.
