On December 2, KPF Associate Principal Carmine D’Alessandro joined industry leaders at the CTBUH New York event to discuss the innovative design and construction of 343 Madison Avenue, a next-generation office tower currently under construction near Grand Central Terminal.
The 49-story Class-A office tower, developed by BXP, is set to redefine the Midtown Manhattan skyline. Featuring a series of landscaped setbacks that lead to a soaring amenity level with co-working and conference spaces, a high-end lounge, and indoor-outdoor dining with panoramic city views, the building is animated by curved glazing and bronze-colored walls, which give it a distinctive architectural identity. The tower relies on air-source heat pumps, uses no on-site fossil fuels, and is targeting LEED Platinum certification, positioning it to be carbon-neutral as New York City’s energy grid decarbonizes. Public realm improvements, including a widened Madison Avenue sidewalk and direct connections to Grand Central Madison and the city’s pedestrian network, further distinguish the project.
In conversation with Matt Mosca, Senior Construction Manager at BXP, Inc.; Eli Gottlieb, Managing Principal at Thornton Tomasetti; John Koop, Senior Associate at JB&B; Nima Shahi, VDC Manager at Turner, and Ayse Polat, Regional VDC Manager at Turner; Carmine presented the design and construction strategies that make 343 Madison a model for sustainable urban development. The CTBUH session offered an inside look at how 343 Madison is being planned and built to meet the demands of tomorrow’s workplace.
