The Garment District lobby renovation has been recognized as a finalist in this year’s NYCxDESIGN Awards with winners announced on May 18.
Now in its eleventh year, the NYCxDESIGN Awards, presented by Interior Design magazine, celebrates significant design achievements across New York City and the greater Tri-State area. This year, KPF’s renovation of the 1411 Broadway Lobby was named a finalist—a recognition of the project’s ambition to transform a once-overlooked space into a vibrant, art-filled destination rooted in its neighborhood’s creative legacy.
Inspired by the Garment District’s history and the building’s former role as the World Apparel Center, the design weaves together art, materiality, and spatial experience into a cohesive architectural identity. A large-scale kinetic artwork by Yaacov Agam anchors the space, its shifting geometry and recurring V-shape motif echoed in the building’s façade fins and carried into the revitalized interior. A 67-foot terrazzo countertop bar spans the length of the lobby, managing the natural grade change between Broadway and Seventh Avenue while accommodating a full range of daily activity. Vegan leather upholstery, suiting-stitch carpet, and integrated planters complete a space that is functional, sustainable, and deeply tied to its context.
The project was previously featured by Interior Design among eight global projects foregrounding sustainable design, affirming the lobby’s material integrity and design ambition.
The 2026 NYCxDESIGN Awards Ceremony took place on May 18, 2026, during the NYCxDESIGN Festival (May 14-20). The event was hosted at Lavan Midtown, 641 W 42nd St, New York, NY.
