Midtown Manhattan’s tallest office tower claimed the American Institute of Steel Construction’s (AISC) merit award for a project over $200 million.
The AISC recognized the ingenuity of KPF’s design, remarking that “The building’s simple geometry of tapering rectangular volumes integrates the aesthetics of the golden age of high-rise buildings with contemporary concepts of designing for sustainability and enrichment of the public realm.” It will be featured in the May 2022 issue of Modern Steel Construction.
‘The complexity of joining to the train station coupled with the intermediate trusses up through the tower made this project stand out. The variety of connections and coordination make this project very impressive,’ said judge Bruce McEvoy, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Principal, Design Director, Perkins & Will. The tower’s construction made use of a steel-first erection system pioneered by Severud Associates Consulting Engineers, the structural engineers for the project. This approach “allowed construction manager AECOM Tishman to absorb potential delays in concrete placement while maximizing the impact of speedy erection times on the overall schedule,” said the AISC, and contributed to One Vanderbilt’s completion ahead of schedule. Other companies involved in One Vanderbilt’s construction were Banker Steel Co., fabricator/detailer; Bramco Steel, steel consultant; Ellwood Specialty Steel, forged steel fabricator; and NYC Constructors LLC, erector.
Sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2) Awards program recognizes projects that illustrate the exciting possibilities of building with structural steel. The AISC, headquartered in Chicago, is a non-partisan, not-for-profit technical institute and trade association established in 1921 to serve the structural steel design community and construction industry.
