MGM Cotai Featured on the BBC’s Amazing Hotels

The KPF-designed MGM Cotai opened this season of the BBC’s Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby.

The show puts presenters Giles Coren and Monica Galetti behind the scenes in some of the world’s ‘most incredible hotels’. As part of the episode, which was filmed in January during the run up to the Chinese New Year, KPF Principals John Bushell and Shawn Duffy were interviewed about the design.

Conceived as a composition of jewel-like boxes, the building was designed to echo the MGM Grand in Macau and uses Chinese decorative motifs and a combination of materials and palettes to distinguish its uses and form.

The complex comprises nine ‘boxes’, accommodating VIP suites, gaming rooms and a spa accessed from the main entrance, and a two-story podium housing pavilions, villas, gardens and service areas. Views through the building and between the ‘boxes’ break down the volumes, endow a sense of grandeur to the site, and enhance visitor experience. At its heart, The Spectacle is an immersive space, merging nature and cutting-edge technology with a dramatic, record-breaking roof.

The episode is available to watch on iPlayer (sorry, UK only).
