The leading technology company held an opening ceremony at the KPF-designed adaptive reuse office building on Madison Square Park, the site of its new headquarters space.
One Madison Avenue hosted IBM employees, partners, and community members at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 6. The project updates a mid-century podium and adds an elegant new tower along with over an acre of outdoor space and terraces, all boasting exceptional views of Madison Square Park and the adjacent 5 Madison Clock Tower. The renovation enables open floor plates to accommodate flexible workspace, generous ceiling heights, and a modern elevator system.
By retaining 67% of the building’s original structure, a significant amount of embodied energy was reused during the construction process, lowering the environmental impact of the project. “Positioned to be among the most notable adaptive reuse projects of present-day New York, the LEED Gold CI certified building will utilize IBM solutions including Maximo and Envizi to track, analyze and report sustainability progress,” says IBM.
The modernized building retains its historical character and is situated in deference to the landmarked clock tower, embodying the evolving character of the city. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said at the ceremony, “One Madison Avenue demonstrates a new chapter in the partnership between IBM and the city and state of New York.”
