Domus Magazine Features Zayed International Airport, Terminal A

A civic landmark for the emirates, KPF’s iconic airport terminal is featured in Domus #1902 “The Future of Flight and Space.”

“The design was driven by passenger experience and the desire to represent the city of Abu Dhabi with a building that referenced its cultural and natural environment,” says KPF Design Principal, Mustafa Chehabeddine. “Airport requirements are in a constant state of flux as technology and security change. At Terminal A, flexibility is created by replacing columns with long spanning arches, anticipating future modifications. The undulating nature of the roof and facades provides solar protection to improve comfort and reduce cooling loads.”

Zayed International Airport, Terminal A, which opened in December 2023, provides an inspiring new gateway for the emirate to the world, connecting East and West on a global scale. Informed by the desert and rich geometric patterns of Islamic heritage, Terminal A delivers a seamless travel experience, while more than doubling the airport’s capacity, to up to 45 million passengers per year – with the ability to accommodate up to 80 million.
