390 Madison Avenue Wins 2016 AIANY Design Award

The American Institute of Architects in New York’s (AIANY) annual Design Awards Program recognizes outstanding architectural design by AIA New York Chapter members, New York City based architects in any location, and work in New York City by architects around the globe. The purpose of the awards program is to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence.

This year, KPF’s 390 Madison Avenue is a recipient of the Award of Merit in the projects category.  Due for completion in 2017, the repositioning of 390 Madison includes the demolition of three million pounds of concrete and over 160,000 sq. ft. in the building’s base to allow for the construction of entirely new floors at the top, all in the center of Manhattan.

Reducing four, mid-height floors by nearly 25% allows the construction of eight new floors at the top. Eliminating floors creates double- and triple-height spaces. Improvements at the buildings base and the implementation of retail enlivens the street level. A corner ground-floor retail space will welcome workers and guests from the street. Removed floor slabs and columns create floor to0ceiling-glass walls that blend the line between street and interior, all accented by a sloped exterior corner, activating the intersection at 46th Street and Madison Avenue.
