30 Hudson Yards Tops Out at 1,296 Feet

On July 17th, 2018, Related Companies, Oxford Properties Group, and KPF celebrated the official topping out of the Hudson Yards landmark tower, 30 Hudson Yards, which will house the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere. The final beam was placed on its steel crown early that morning.

The 1,296-foot-tall building comprises more than 40,000 pieces of steel weighing 91,500 tons, 1.25 million bolts and enough welding to cover 196 miles. With the firm’s fully-tenanted 10 Hudson Yards open, this event marks the structural apex of KPF’s presence at Hudson Yards. The two towers, designed as a pair, tilt in opposing directions in a purposeful dialogue; one tower defers to the city and the other pays homage to the Hudson River. Together, they will offer varying experiences depending on the viewing location, ultimately creating a dynamic presence on the New York cityscape.

“The topping out of 30 Hudson Yards, and completion of its steel crown, represents another important milestone as we approach the neighborhood’s March 2019 opening,” said L. Jay Cross, President of Related Hudson Yards. “We want to thank the entire team of construction professionals for all of their hard work on one of the most challenging and exciting towers in all of New York City.”

Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States and the largest development in New York City since Rockefeller Center. KPF’s work at Hudson Yards includes the masterplan, over rail podium, three towers—10, 30, and 55 Hudson Yards—and 20 Hudson Yards, a retail podium designed in partnership with Elkus Manfredi. With a team over 100 KPFers working on the site since the project’s inception over ten years ago, the firm is deeply proud to be involved in the transformation of New York City’s Far West Side.
