Rosenberg College of Law Earns LEED Silver

The reinvented building at the University of Kentucky received the certification earlier this month.

KPF’s work at Rosenberg College of Law at the University of Kentucky renovates the original 1965 building, expanding it by 26% and updating the facilities. The design thoughtfully considers the building’s relationship to the rest of the campus, utilizing metal, glass, and brick to create a cohesive pallet across the University. The project introduces 11 new classrooms and 20 collaborative spaces, a third floor with a flexible floorplate, as well as a shaded patio and accessible rooftop terrace.

The building was able to earn its LEED Silver certification through reusing the original structure. The renovation shifts the library to the heart of the school, allowing natural light to reach more areas through a sky-lit circulation spine that also increases wayfinding. This central staircase and additional commons areas were designed to align and partially bear on the existing structural grid. The building management systems provide energy efficiency and hybrid fan coils comprise the mechanical system.

The Rosenberg College of Law was recently honored with the 2020 AIA Kentucky Design Award, in part for its “ability to link the inside and outside while reframing the relationship of building and community on all sides.” Read more here.
