Neighborhoods Now Wins Award of Citation from AIA New York State

The project, for which KPF collaborated with the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, was honored in the AIANYS Design Awards for its reimagined public spaces based on pandemic recovery strategies.

The Neighborhoods Now initiative began with Urban Design Form and Van Alen Institute in June 2020 with the goal to connect New York neighborhoods heavily impacted by the pandemic. KPF collaborated with AE Superlab, Farzana Gandhi Design Studio, James Corner Field Operations, and JB&B, to create new public space, connection corridors, and update vacant lots on Fulton Street in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood. The effort included communicating with community residents, hosting live workshops, and gathering feedback from tenants and staff to understand the challenges and hopes.

Neighborhoods Now is a pro-bono effort fueled by New York-based design and interdisciplinary firms to aid historically underserved communities that were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more about KPF’s early involvement with Neighborhoods Now here and the two-part summit that took place in October 2020 here.

The Award of Citation recognizes exemplary achievement in a specific aspect of a project, with this year’s winners chosen by a panel of six judges. Tune in October 27th at 12:00 PM EST to virtually celebrate the winners of this year’s awards. Learn more about AIA NY State here and view all the winners here.
