Athletic Village

HKUST Guangzhou

Promoting a lifelong commitment to health and wellness, the Athletic Village cultivates inclusive opportunities through its sports and fitness facilities open to students, faculty, and families.

The village is intended for both leisure and competitions, comprising four distinct sports facilities that house multi-purpose courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, weightlifting facilities, and a track and field with shaded seating for 800+. The stadium mimics the Clear Water Bay campus facility, located beside the canal with views of the water from the seats.

Taking inspiration from the natural landscape of the canal and wetlands, the Athletic Village extends the incorporation of greenery present through the rest of the campus. A sustainable green roof collects water, creates shade, and reduces overall heat gain while allowing natural light to penetrate through the district venues, while photovoltaic panels provide reusable energy for the facilities.

Spanning the exterior perimeter of the campus, the Athletic Village venues encourage fitness as well as provide spaces for spectators to view games and competitions, fostering a sense of school pride and celebration. A green belt connects the sports facilities to the rest of the campus, increasing public accessibility and encouraging active exercise by providing a safe place to walk, run, and cycle away from cars.
