Urban Farm at KPF’s Hysan Place Featured in BBC StoryWorks

The Hong Kong mixed-use building features a rooftop garden, providing plots for over 300 urban farmers each year in one of the world’s most densely populated cities.

Completed in 2012 in Causeway Bay, Hysan Place was Hong Kong’s first LEED Platinum certified commercial project. Sustainability is a core goal of the building, which aims to enliven the community. Hysan Place adds an architectural centerpiece to the commercial district, as well as a program that gives back to residents, Hysan Urban Farm.

The Urban Farm opened on the roof of Hysan Place in 2013, run in partnership with Hong Kong’s Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation as a year-round program. Farmers can take home the produce they grow, and additional produce is distributed to nearby shops, restaurants, and NGOs. The rooftop spans 8,000 square feet, and Hysan Place features further environmental designs such as “urban windows” – three holes through the building which aid in air ventilation.

BBC StoryWorks produced a video for Hysan covering the Urban Farm’s development and current practices, following a family as they enjoy produce grown from their plot and share what the opportunity has taught them. View the story “Hysan | Building a Better Future” here.
