On Thursday, University leaders welcomed Secretary Blinken and a delegation of US officials to the Shanghai campus, designed by KPF to serve as a gateway between Chinese and American students.
The visit was an opportunity for Secretary Blinken to meet with and hear from current students of NYU Shanghai. He explained, “I think what you’re engaged in is so important to the future of both of our countries,” referring to the US and China. He emphasized the importance of building connections and fostering understanding between citizens of both countries noting, “especially with students, with Americans studying in China, Chinese students studying in the United States, getting to know each other’s countries, getting to know each other,” while highlighting the significance and complexity of the US-China relationship. Secretary Blinken was joined by US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns and US Consul General in Shanghai Scott Walker, and was hosted by NYU Shanghai Chancellor Tong Shijun, Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman, and Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen. Last year, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visited the campus.
The NYU Shanghai campus represents the institution’s mission to provide a gateway for Chinese students to the world and international students to China. Through dialogue with both eastern and western stakeholders and experts, the KPF design team addressed several distinctive Sino-American criteria within the site, such as integrating NYU’s mission to provide a liberal arts education with the Chinese desire for more specialized programs. Research on successful examples of cultural integration informed the decision to organize the campus in a loop of related programs to further these interdisciplinary relationships.
