One Vanderbilt Featured in Smithsonian Channel Series “How Did They Build That?”

Airing on Sunday September 8, the fourth episode of the new season is dedicated to exploring the engineering and design behind KPF’s transit-oriented supertall.

The tallest office tower in Midtown, One Vanderbilt is one of the soaring landmarks that define Manhattan’s skyline. The building’s massing comprises four interlocking and tapering volumes that spiral towards the sky, an elegant shape in sympathetic proportion to the nearby Chrysler Building. At ground level, the building joins the spatial sequence of Grand Central Station and forms a doorstep to the city, greeting thousands of commuters daily in an integrated complex of below-grade transit connections.

“How Did They Build That?,” hosted by Jay Ellis, focuses on engineering and design marvels that challenge common perceptions of what is possible. Viewable on multiple platforms via the Smithsonian Channel, the series’ new season premiered on August 18 and airs every Sunday at 9pm EST.
