Reporting on Manhattan’s latest supertall, the piece outlines the KPF-designed building’s quintessentially New York design gestures.
Housing 100 new condominiums within the 1,000-foot-tall tower, 520 Fifth Avenue remains deferential to its place and context on one of Manhattan’s most celebrated thoroughfares. Speaking directly to the project’s interior designer, Vicky Charles, Newsweek reports that “the city’s rich architectural history largely served as the inspiration for 520 Fifth Avenue.”
KPF President and Design Principal James von Klemperer notes how the grand terra cotta arches at the tower’s exterior ground plane reminisce the city’s varied Beaux-Arts landmarks and “Hugh Ferris’ architectural visions of 1920’s New York.” The interior marries contemporary amenity with comfort, calling back to the warmth and elegance of old New York, “with plenty of warm natural light flooding its lofty space through floor-to-ceiling glass windows.” The historically appropriate design at 520 Fifth Avenue combines thoughtfully crafted spaces with contextuality, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for residents.
