The university announced that the lab building, which is currently under construction, will be named for philanthropists Roy and Diana Vagelos who recently donated $400 million to support the university’s biomedical science programs.
Located on the Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus in upper Manhattan, the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories will provide 55,000 square feet of new laboratory space and be a model of sustainability. The very first fully electrified, university-owned laboratory building in New York City, the Vagelos Innovation Laboratories is designed by KPF to use significantly less energy than similar buildings, meeting Local Law 97 requirements and the goals set by Columbia University’s own Plan 2030 greenhouse gas reduction commitments. The new building will connect to the Columbia University School of Nursing and Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion, creating a unified academic and research facility.
The Vagelos’s gift of $400 million will expand upon the Roy and Diana Vagelos Institute for Basic Biomedical Science, which was established through their giving last year. According to the university, the gift will support the construction of the new lab building and unite cutting-edge research taking place in Columbia’s basic science departments, medical and graduate education programs, and clinical departments in a new organizational model.
