On April 19th, the jury revealed the three winners, in addition to two honorable mentions, of the annual fellowship, as part of an event hosted in KPF’s New York office.
The jury noted common themes between the winning portfolios, including topics such as urban resilience, adaptive landscapes, community, circularity, plenum, and microclimates. The 2023 fellowships went to Tom Hsu of Yale University, Yuan Alice Meng of Cooper Union, and Alexander Burran of Rice University.
The jury chose winners through a blind selection process. In addition to announcing the winners and honorable mentions, the jury shared highlights from additional submissions with compelling research and impressive imagery.
This year’s jury was chaired by J. Meejin Yoon, Dean of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University and co-founding partner of Höweler + Yoon; joined by Nina Cooke John, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP and Founding Principal of Studio Cooke John Architecture and Design; and Mimi Hoang, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP and Co-Founding Principal of nARCHITECTS. KPF Principal Elie Gamburg and KPF President James von Klemperer also sat on the jury.
The KPF Traveling Fellowship presents awards to students who are in their penultimate year at one of the twenty-seven design schools with whom the firm has chosen to partner. The goal of the award is to allow students to broaden their education through a summer of travel before their final year at school.
