KPF’s London office has embraced a new medium, turning its focus from the skyline to the sugarscape to participate in Gingerbread City. The annual exhibition invites the public to connect with architecture and urban design as well as raising money to support the Museum of Architecture.
Designed for the holiday season, Gingerbread City calls for architects, designers and engineers to create an entire city out of edible treats. Taking part for the first time this year, a team of architects and model makers from KPF constructed a confection named the Teacake Hotel. The process entailed exploring the potential of new materials: casting faceted sugar glass; pre-fabricating gingerbread facade panels with bespoke, 3D printed, cookie cutters; creating a sweet public realm; and having some fun with candy-cane hot-tubs and frosting snowballs. The resulting model is good enough to eat.
