Kavitha Mathew Discusses Social Responsibility and Community Engagement in AIANY Panel

On November 9th, KPF’s Global Diversity Officer joined the 2021 TORCH Mentorship Program’s sixth panel to explore how cooperative design can be a valuable tool for creating successful environments.

Participatory design directly engages users in a design process. Also known as “co-creation”, “co-design”, or “cooperative design,” it encompasses techniques useful to both initial discovery and subsequent design phases of a project. The sixth panel of the 2021 TORCH Mentorship Program explored how architects can develop social responsibility within their practice and communities. A panel of AIA members discussed the importance of community engagement and how it serves as a valuable tool in creating successful environments that foster community connection and ownership.

Mathew was joined by Jeffrey Dugan, FAIA, Principal, Dattner Architects; Laura Ettelman, FAIA, Managing Partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; and Michael Hsu, FAIA, IIDA, Principal, Michael Hsu Office of Architecture. Shilpa Patel, AIA, Project Manager Associate, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill moderated the panel.

The TORCH Mentorship Program brings emerging professionals together with Fellows of the AIA to share professional knowledge, culture, and leadership strategies between architectural generations. Learn more about the program here.
